Vinyl Siding Suits the Approved National Green Building Standard

At long last, the word "draft" has been removed and replaced with "ANSI approved." And in the ANSI approved ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard™, vinyl siding continues to contribute to achieving more points for resource and energy efficiency than other exterior cladding.

When the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) — a joint effort of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC) — was approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in late January, it became the only green certification program to receive ANSI approval.

In the NGBS, vinyl siding can contribute to achieving points through performance in these categories: (click to see points chart).

Don Ferrier — a custom builder in Fort Worth, Texas, who serves on the NAHB subcommittee that oversees the standard — says that ANSI approval elevates the NGBS to the level of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED ® for Homes standard. Mr. Ferrier built the first LEED-certified home in Texas and says the two programs are "without a shadow of a doubt the two most stringent green building programs that are available."
